Getting Here

Getting Here

Phnom Penh International Airport

Phnom Penh International Airport is an estimated 9km or 30-50 minutes’ drive to/from the city. Upon arrival, transport is easily available and within vicinity of the lobby. Practical options for a small group or persons with more luggages include taxis from the public taxi stand at US$9 and US$7 for a Tuk-tuk. To secure your taxi, make payment at the taxi desk inside the door exiting the terminal; a driver will be allocated. Alternatives include motorcycle taxis that may be hired for US$2 to commute to the town centre.

Getting Here

Phnom Penh Ferry Port

Ferries connect Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and the journey is estimated to be four (4) to five (5) hours. Cost of a ticket is approximately US$25.

River ferries arriving from Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City will dock at Phnom Penh Ferry Port on Sisowath Quay Blvd or the Riverfront Road near Street 104.

Several restaurants and hotels are within short walking distance of the port. You may then board a Tuk-tuk, commonly on standby for arriving passengers.

Arrival by Bus

Arrival by Bus

Although there is no centralised bus station in Phnom Penh, buses from various companies such as Phnom Penh Sorya Transport Capitol Tours and GST Express operate bus services to/from the unofficial station at southwest corner of Central Market.

There are several direct buses to Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Vientiane, Siem Reap and several other locations. Most of the long-distance buses drop off and pick up passengers in major towns such as Kompong Thom en route to Siem Reap or Pursat on the way to Battambang. Advance bookings are necessary and may be arranged by most travel agents and/or guesthouses for a small fee.

Getting Around Town

Tuk Tuks

Remork (Tuk-Tuks)

A popular means of transportation within the city is the tuk-tuk. These refer to a motorcycle vehicle with a cabin for passengers also known as motorcycle trailers. Unlike the “open-door” tuk-tuks in Bangkok, the Cambodian tuk-tuks offer a more comfortable and enjoyable ride. They are also a more economical option than taxis and with a somewhat more intimate and charming view of the city. Furthermore, as majority of the passengers are visiting travelers, the drivers in most of the tourist areas are able to speak basic English.

Motorcycle Taxi

Motorcycle Taxi

A common sight around the city, motorcycle taxis or motodups are widespread and fastest form of transportation. These motodups are easily located at almost every corner in town. They cost about US$6-$8 per day and tend to be higher at night, with multiple passengers.

Safety precautions need to be adhered to as passengers of these Motodups stand a higher chance of being victims of theft or involved in an accident compared to taxis. Always ensure that your personal belongings are secured in front of you or between you and the driver. On top of that, a general rule of thumb is to be consciously aware of your surroundings.

Buses

Buses

At present, there is no regular in-city bus system in Phnom Penh.

Public Taxis

Public Taxis

Taxis are available at selected locations such as the area outside the Foreign Correspondents' Club on Sisowath Quay. As taxis do not have meters, fares should be negotiated prior to boarding. Due to variations in fuel prices, fares may vary. Another option is to make arrangements with the hotel concierge. Sometimes, these come in the form of unmarked and non-metered taxis. Such taxi-car arrangements with a driver may cost between US$25-$35 per day, while a shorter trip within town costs US$4-$5.

Cyclos

Cyclos

A more traditional and relaxing form of transport is the cyclos, a three-wheeled cycle-rickshaw. Although significantly slower then a motodop, the cyclos is well-liked by tourists as they are less chaotic than motodops. Furthermore, the canopy above passengers offers welcome shelter from the rain or sun. Cost of a cyclos ride is on par with the motodup.

Motorcycle Rental

Motorcycle Rental

Motorcycles are available for rent from US$5-$9 per day. However, it is important to note the traffic in Phnom Penh is challenging and hazardous. If travellers insist on riding, do ensure you or the driver is/are experienced and prepared to battle chaotic traffic conditions. It is recommended to seek other forms of public transport for safety and to enjoy the remainder of the trip.
