Shadows Beyond Time: Sbek Thom Exhibition & UNESCO Jubilee
This November, NagaWorld, a long-time patron of local artists, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, presents “Shadows Beyond Time: A Sacred World Heritage”. This exhibition celebrates Sbek Thom’s 1,000-year legacy and the 20th anniversary of its inscription on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.
Celebrating two decades of international recognition, this first-ever public-private initiative since Sbek Thom’s inscription brings together an exhibition that consists of live performances with Pinpeat orchestra accompaniment, hands-on learning, and an augmented reality (AR) filter, all under one roof.
“The fire casts the shadow, but the artist breathes life into the silence.”
A Legacy Revived
Sbek Thom, literally “large leather” in Khmer, brings to life the epic Reamker—Cambodia’s adaptation of the Indian Ramayana—through monumental carved‑leather silhouettes, ritualised movement, and live Pinpeat music. Though the tradition nearly disappeared during the Khmer Rouge regime, master practitioners like the Sovanna Phum Art Association have worked tirelessly to revive it.

NagaWorld is proud to support this revival. During the exhibition, visitors can join weekly shadow puppet-making workshops, experience a Khmer costume trial, and purchase curated artisanal crafts. All proceeds from these activities benefit the Sovanna Phum Art Association directly.
Innovation Meets Tradition
Bridging cultural heritage and innovation, the programme introduces a smartphone augmented reality (AR) filter inspired by Sbek Thom. Visitors can engage with the art form through interactive digital elements, extending their experience beyond the gallery walls.
